Harrisburg University has signed and returned to the U.S. Department of Education the Certification and Agreement, and will use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to its students. The CARES Act provides Harrisburg University specifically with a generous grant in the amount of 768,293 intended to directly benefit its students. $735,000 (roughly 96%) of that amount will be distributed directly to students beginning in June. $33,293 (approximately 4%) will remain in reserve through the end of August (unless depleted earlier) in anticipation of appeals based on extenuating circumstances above and beyond the university’s initial determination of eligibility.
The university recognizes that all its students have been affected by the COVID-19 emergency, whether due to having to purchase new equipment and/or invest in technological upgrades to successfully shift from an on-campus to a virtual campus environment; or due to loss of employment, resulting in difficulty in paying for rent, food, or other living expenses; or due to other unforeseen circumstances. Approximately 602 students at Harrisburg University were initially identified as potentially eligible for this grant. Ultimately, 588 were determined to meet eligibility based on the following criteria:
- Student must have been enrolled at least part time in a degree-seeking undergraduate or graduate program during the spring, 2020 semester
- Student must be eligible to receive Title IV aid as determined by the 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Student must not have been enrolled solely online
- Student must not have been dismissed from the university for any reason, nor have withdrawn except for reasons related to the COVID-10 emergency at any point during the spring, 2020 semester
A one-time grant in the amount of $1250 will be issued automatically in the form of a check and mailed to the students who meet the previously mentioned criteria. Students do not need to submit anything to receive it.
Students who can demonstrate expenses directly related to the COVID-19 emergency that exceed $1250 may submit an appeal for additional funds by sending an email to FinancialAid@HarrisburgU.edu. The appeal must state the student’s name, student ID, the reason for the appeal, the amount requested, and documentation of expenses. Since students are already receiving $1250 from this grant, all documentation must show expenses that exceed that amount. Requests that do not provide the preceding information will not be considered.
