Center for Applied Environmental and
Geospatial Technology

About the Center

In 2012, the Geospatial Technology Center (GTC) was created to expand the Geospatial Technology Program from the traditional classwork college degree. The GTC allowed students to gain valuable work experience while applying the skills they learned in class to real-world client projects and grants. The GTC gained more clients and grants, allowing the Center to grow and employ students from a diverse set of majors including the Geospatial Technology, Environmental Science, Integrative Science, Forensics, Advanced Manufacturing, and Interactive Media programs.

With a Center that is currently expanding its projects and student backgrounds, the name needed to reflect our diverse set of expertise. Therefore, in 2020, the Center for Applied Environmental and Geospatial Technology was born. Today, it employs 10 students, three full-time staff members, and two Center directors, who are also faculty members at Harrisburg University. The Center provides students an excellent opportunity to work on multiple different projects in a variety of industries – preparing them for success after graduation.

Associated Programs

With an expanding workload, we found ourselves in the need for geospatial mapping support but not enough work to necessitate hiring of a dedicated employee. The Harrisburg University Center of Applied Environmental and Geospatial Technology (HU) has proven to be an ideal partner. HU has met all our geospatial mapping needs, which in many cases involve very short turnaround times. We see Harrisburg University as an extension of our staff and has proven to be a value-added relationship.

The Harrisburg Steam Plant, in effort to better manage system components and schedule maintenance for their underground district steam distribution network, formed a collaborative effort with the Geospatial Technology Center to design, develop and integrate a GIS program. While the Harrisburg Steam Plant provided the objectives and goals, the Geospatial Technology Center provided the skills, knowledge, training and expertise to successfully develop and integrate a working GIS program.

The students were required to develop new graphics or shapefiles since a steam piping distribution system template was not available from ESRI. Students also needed to understand the business of a steam network to fully design and develop the software for the new template.

The Harrisburg Steam Plant continues to utilize the GIS program developed and implemented by the Geospatial Technology Center and continues to benefit from the information and support provided by the department.
